Help me give my students the opportunity to use inquiry-based learning and hands-on problem solving to solve real world problems with a robotics and astro socks classroom kit.
My middle students are energetic and love hands-on projects. These students struggle with problem solving, so the main focus of my classes are to give them great skills and knowledge in identifying, planning for, and solving multi-step problems. Students learn to troubleshoot, revise, and retest their project to gain a better understanding of the solutions available. Most of our students live in poverty with 63% of all students qualifying for assistance. Our school qualifies for all students to get free and reduced-price lunches. Knowing these facts, we don’t ask our students to purchase supplies for our projects, some are purchased by the school, some supplies are purchased by me.
My Project
Yes, some of these materials will be used by students learning from home. Our school has an every other day schedule that will require them to learn remotely every other day and with the possibility that we have have to switch to all remote learning. Through a large grant, our school was able to provide every student with an iPad and access to Office 365 which will allow them to access the MS Excel Workbook required for these lessons.
These activities will make a difference in my students’ learning by allowing them to engage with fully integrated STEM standards and developing skills and knowledge that will make them better problem solvers and educated citizens.
The Robotic Human Hand Project integrates life science with robotics and the Astronaut Socks is a project This activity integrates a design challenge around an interesting problem astronauts face while onboard the International Space Station. Both include investigative activities, while incorporating crucial 21st-century technical skills like data science and software, mechanical, and electrical engineering for an authentic learning experience. In my class, emphasis will be placed on the importance of combining science and technology to reflect the mechanics of the human body.
