My students need engaging STEM activities to enhance their problem-solving skills, collaboration abilities and opportunities to help them become confident thinkers.
My first grade students are full of life, energy and kindness. We spend a great deal of time helping each other figure out who we are as learners and how we best learn.
Even though my students all receive free breakfast and lunch and encounter many hardships at home, they have a heart for others.
Earlier this year I gave each student one dollar to keep and use for themselves, or "grow" their dollar by individual projects and raise money to buy socks for homeless students. These sweet little amazing 7 year olds raised enough money to purchase over 2,000 pairs of socks! I want them to feel empowered to make a change, not waiting until they are grown-up, but right now! They are rock stars!
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to use these STEM kits in small groups. These hands on experiences will allow the students to come up with a plan, carry it out, see if it works and make improvements where needed. These chances to see things another way and gain confidence in their thinking is invaluable, and that confidence carries over into their other learning experiences.
Learners need these hands on experiences to help them become confident thinkers.
My kids learn from each other. That small group interaction, learning to voice your ideas, learn to disagree and cooperate, are life long skills
