Using Solar Power to Charge Our Phones

Help me give my students 2 Solar Charger cell phone charger battery packs.

My Students

My students are growing in their interest and ability to innovate. Although they may be at different stages of innovative thought, my students share at least two traits. My students are amazing people! They are eager to design and build their own unique experiences, and they are interested in learning and applying new tools.

Our charter school has a mixed population of 64% Title I (unduplicated count) students from predominantly urban settings.

Students of all races and a number of ethnic backgrounds work together in a safe and secure environment. Our school demographics are as follows: 3.8% Asian, 31.2% Afro-American, 30.1% Hispanic 5.9% multiracial, and 29.0% White. Students at our school are motivated and enthusiastic when given the opportunity to show their inventiveness and talents.

My Project

The question I get daily from my students is "Can I charge my phone in class today?" I want them to experience first-hand learning about the power of the sun and allow them to experience how solar works with real-world examples and charging their phones is a perfect application of this concept.

I believe that hands-on science is the best way to teach concepts and using solar power to charge their cell phones will definitely help them understand the principles of energy transformations.

Students need to question, hypothesis, experiment, test, observe and analyze using real materials in order to comprehend what they are learning. I envision my students using this setup to design experiments based on computing how much power is needed to keep their cell phones charged.

Using these Solar Charger setups, my students will explore alternative, renewable energy sources by applying the technology directly to their personal daily cell phone charging needs.
