Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I teach have special needs. Seventeen out of twenty-five of my students are also second language learners. These students are the most behind in basic reading and reading comprehension.
One strategy we use to increase reading is a research-based program, where students listen to small parts of a recorded book three times. When they have finished listening to that part of the book three times, they read it. If they read successfully, then they can go on to the next part of the book and listen to that book three times. This continues until they have read the entire book.
Once the student is able to read the book, they take a reading test on the computer to earn points. A goal is set for each grading period and if a student earns his/her points, they earn a reward. Rewards include going roller-skating, to the movies, to a pizza restaurant and a school carnival.
By using the books on tape, my students are able to read books that they would never be able to read independently. This builds their self-esteem tremendously. Also they are exposed to a variety of books and develop a love of reading.
The materials necessary for this product are cassette players and headphones. My kids are reading so much that it is difficult for me to keep enough books taped for them! I can't say enough about how successful this has been for my students. I would love the opportunity to continue and expand this program in my class. Not only are the students learning a great deal and developing a love for reading, but they are also building their self-esteem and confidence. Their increased reading level carries over to improve their grades in learning in all academic areas.
