A Tier-3 Therapeutic Learning Classroom in a public elementary school setting in Central Massachusetts. The Therapeutic Learning Classroom (TLC) helps students K-4 that have social-emotional needs. The students in the classroom all have Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and receive accommodations for academics, social-emotional and behavioral needs. Often times due to the students challenging behaviors it can be difficult for them to access the general education curriculum. Each student within the classroom has a daily incentive plan, each plan allows them to earn points for engaging inappropriate classroom behaviors. It will be beneficial to have a TLC school store that will allow the students in the classroom to earn items that will motivate them to engage in the appropriate classroom behaviors. The items on the list below were chosen by completing individual preference assessments with each student in the classroom. Due to the items on this list being chosen based on the student preference assessments the items will be highly motivating to each student and will increase the student's likely-hood to engage in positive behaviors.
The incentives will help to motivate the students to continue to make appropriate choices and continue to have a positive classroom environment!
My Project
In the TLC classroom, the teacher and staff members focus on reinforcing appropriate classroom behaviors, by providing positive reinforcement to the students throughout the school day utilizing individualized point systems as described above. We as a team want to increase the student's motivation to continue to make good choices throughout the school day, this can be done by allowing the students to earn highly motivating items at the end of each week by trading in their daily earned points. This will in return help to motivate the students to have appropriate classroom behaviors, while simultaneously decreasing the challenging behaviors. While positive behaviors increase the challenging behaviors will decrease which will then allow for the students to have better access to the general education curriculum and continue to make progress learning.
The students are more active learners when they are receiving positive reinforcement and are less likely to engage in challenging behaviors when they are motivated to have access to preferred rewards.
The list has small toys that will be utilized as rewards to help support the TLC school store and increase the motivation of the students to have appropriate classroom behaviors.
