I teach fifth grade at a inner-city school with a vast range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Fifth graders like to give the impression that they are "grown up" and shun "baby" activities. So, when I decided to read "Thank You Mr. Falker" (a wonderful picture book about a student who struggled with reading as a child) by Patricia Polacco aloud, I figured they would roll their eyes. I was shocked when they listened intently until I read the very last line (the last line reveals that the main character is actually Patricia Polacco). When I closed the book and scanned the room, they started to clap. Their young eyes had a look of sheer amazement. Now, I read a picture book to my class at least once a day. This has really inspired students to read.
Now, I want to keep this fire burning. I need more short story books for my classroom. These books need to have great pictures and a message for students.
