My amazing students range in grades K-6. These are students in general education who also receive special education support instruction by me. Each of these students have been challenged to keep up with their peers academically but may have fallen behind. The majority of my students have been identified with a Specific Learning Disability, often Dyslexia. Although some of them struggle with reading, writing, and math skills, they are motivated to be the best they can be and persevere through day to day challenges they face.
My students are counting on me to provide them intensive instruction and intervention to help them achieve grade level standards just like their peers.
They work hard to fit in with everyone else but their learning challenges sometimes put obstacles in their way. Working with these students each day consist of so much more than just academic instruction. Helping these students believe in themselves is a part of that road to success.
My students attend a high poverty diverse elementary school with high success rate. Many students are English Learners which also increases the challenges they face in school. Our school has been identified as a California Distinguished School.
My Project
Learning to read is hard work. For some children it seems to come naturally while other children struggle to develop these skills. It is important to provide a variety of opportunities for children to learn and practice reading. It is also important to provide a variety of instructional methods to support students with a variety of learning styles.
When a student listens to a story they are not only learning to read but also are learning how to read with pauses, changes in tone of voice, and read with fluency.
A listening center will allow the students to listen to the story while following along in their book. The listening center will allow a small group to listen to a story without disrupting the other students in the classroom. It will also allow the teacher to put students into small groups to give more individualized support in areas each student needs it.
