Help students be better readers by allowing them to listen to examples of good readers. By listening to audio books, students have the opportunity to hear smooth fluency, good expression, and appropriate speed. Students will be allowed to visit a listening center daily to use the audio books.
I teach two blocks of Reading/Language Arts, meaning I teach a total of 39 students!
My students are English Language Learners, Academically Gifted, and some currently have Reading Interventions through our RTI program. I also have a non-verbal Autistic student. Many of my students participate in a before school tutoring program to help them improve their Reading skills.
Our school has a variety of different socio-economic backgrounds, but the majority of our school population is on free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Our classroom runs on the Daily 5 instructional model. This means students visit five different literacy centers each day: Read to Self, Read to Partner, Word Work, Writing, and Listening. Due to the lack of equipment and materials, my students often do not have the opportunity to visit Listening daily. With the addition of audio books my English Language Learners, Reading Intervention students, and nonverbal Autistic student will hear what good fluency sounds like. They will have the chance to hear good expression and appropriate reading speeds. All my students will be exposed to a larger variety of text.
Many of my students do not have much parental support at home.
Listening to reading may only happen for some students while they are at school. Children need to hear what good reading sounds like to help them become more proficient in their fluency. By funding this project, students in my classroom would have opportunities each day to hear someone (other than the teacher) read to them.
