Using Music to Develop Literacy Skills & Basic Concepts
My students need a Classroom Song Bank, Circle Time Song Posters, Read&Sing Favorites, and Learning Basic Skills Through Music CD: Volumes 1&2 to develop literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The digital age has made it challenging for teachers to compete with TV, video games and movies on DVD. Students need activities that are active, interesting, and fun. Having books, posters, & CDs will help make learning fun and exciting.
My 20 Pre-K students attend a Title I school that services a predominantly rural community.
They are curious, energetic, and enthusiastic about learning new concepts and ideas. More that 80% of the student population come from economically disadvantaged homes and qualify for free or reduced lunches.
My Project
My 29 years of experience have taught me that children like to sing and often learn new concepts easier when a song is involved. Having the Classroom Song Bank, Read & Sing Classroom Favorites, and Circle Time Song Posters will allow students see printed words that match what they are singing. Making that connection is a very important early literacy skill. Having Hap Palmer's CD's: Learning Basic Skills Through Music: Volumes 1&2 will introduce students to concepts including colors, numbers & shapes. Students will also learn to follow directions in a fun way.
Singing is such a natural thing, and makes remembering concepts easier.
Imagine little learners making the connection between printed words and reading by singing. Well, that will happen when you help fund this project. Best of all, the materials will last for years to come and help many students develop literacy skills.
