Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education Generalist (Resource Teacher) in a Title I elementary school in Thornton, CO serving a caseload of students in grades kindergarten through 6. I am also the Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS) Lead for our building, which means I help a collaborative team of professionals (Administration, General Education Teachers, Interventionists, etc.) problem-solve through a tiered system of supports in six-week data cycles.
Our team works tirelessly to understand our students' needs from both an academic AND a social/emotional perspective, which in many cases involves fine-tuning multi-leveled interventions that can support children that have experienced significant trauma that impacts every aspect of who they are as a learner.
I personally serve a caseload of just under 30 students, however, under the umbrella of MTSS, our team serves over 200 students and all of our staff.
My Project
Many of my students have experienced deep trauma, and they often feel as if they are spiraling out of control. I want to use the materials from this project to support teaching them self-regulation strategies through mindfulness.
With a school-wide focus on building Habits of Character (Being Effective Learners, Being Ethical People, and Contributing to a Better World), I want my students to embrace the habit of perseverance within this matrix.
I believe they can increase stamina, coping skills, and grit through mindful practices around breathing, meditation, yoga, and visualization. I’ve curated a collection of resources I’d like to bring into my classroom that includes yoga mats for restorative activities, books to teach a variety of interventions, and chakra crystals to give students a visual and tactile way of making connections to our mindful work. This project will give my students the tools they need to start engaging in targeted interventions for trauma-informed care and learning.
