Using Microscopes in Elementary

My students need 4 microscopes to make our life science unit come to life.

My Students

The science state standards require that my students spend 20% of their class time on hands-on activities. I record this by planning a lab once a week. The resources for my 5th grade science classes are expensive and require preparation.

The community I teach in is low-income.

It is a suburb to a larger town. Many of the parents and caregivers are blue-collared workers, farmers, or on social security. Over 75% of our students receive free and reduced lunches. We have a variety of cultures including African Americans (about 25%), Caucasians (about 65%), and Hispanics (about 10%). Approximately 15-18% of our 5th/6th grade students have been identified with learning disabilities. They are integrated into a my regular Science classes. All of my student speak English; however, Spanish is spoken in about 1/2 of the Hispanic students' homes. This year's 5th/6th graders have several students identified as either ADHD or ADD. A science program with materials available for inquiry is necessary for my students.

My Project

By having the microscopes, my students will be able to observe plant and animal cells. We also dissect a flower and the microscopes will allow them to observe flower parts up close. We will observe onion and celery cells. Having the microscopes will introduce them to a field they may become interested in making a career out of, such as work as lab technicians, where they will use microscopes every day. I want to expose them to a world of opportunity, as I prepare them for the future.

I work very hard to bring science to life for my students and the microscopes would aid me in being able to do this.

I love having hands on activities for my students to experience the world around them.
