Using Manipulatives to Close the COVID Learning Gap

Help me give my students the reading and math manipulatives we need in our classroom to close the learning gap in an engaging way.

My Students

My second and third grade students are bright excited children who are eager to learn! Some of my students have unique learning challenges that require hands on educational manipulatives. Because of the pandemic this is really their first full year with in-person learning and many have experienced learning loss. They come from a rural area with many different economic and academic backgrounds. Our school is a blended learning STEAM school so we do many activities, projects and exploration online and in class.

My Project

I have found that my students are more engaged if they are using their whole body. Using their sense of touch helps them remember. It is true.... If I do, I remember.

I feel manipulatives and games are essential for students to deepen their understanding of mathematical and literary concepts.

The literary, math games and manipulatives I am requesting will help bridge my students COVID learning gap. They will also allow students to visually represent their understanding of core subjects.

Students using manipulatives and games are more interested, engaged and develop more skills than students not using manipulatives. They are able to build a concrete understanding of the material by visualizing seeing the concept. I have also found in my classroom that games have had a positive effect of student’s academic achievements.

Using the multiplication pop-its and games I have requested will allow my students to practice math facts in a tactile and engaging way.

The reading games and manipulatives I have requested will also provide an exciting way to reinforce important literary skills.

From personal experience, all students can benefit from the use of manipulatives but because of the COVID learning loss I feel it is critical to provide students engaging quality material especially at this time.

This funding would be worthwhile and help my students because currently, I do not have a classroom budget for these items.
