Using Logic and STEM Activities to Build Thinking Skills
Help me give my students logic and STEM activities like Gravity Maze, Straw Constructor pieces, and a Zen Artist board to help them expand their thinking skills.
I work in a public PreK-5th grade elementary school in Iowa. We serve approximately 310 students, 75% of which are eligible for free and/or reduced lunch. We have a multi-categorical special education program in our building that serves the needs of about 60 children (19%). Many of our families have high mobility rates and students move from school to school often. We serve students with diverse ethnicities and cultures.
Our children have diverse academic needs.
We serve struggling readers and writers, as well as those who are proficient.
My Project
These STEM and logic activities will give our students the opportunity to build their thinking skills. Many of the children we serve have a low reading and math levels, but love to figure out logic puzzles and activities. It is hard to reach them where they are because they lack the ability to think problems through. Our goal is to help them build thinking skills that they can apply to real world experience.
Our children's future depends on their ability to think in new and different ways.
By providing logic and STEM activities, they will struggle and solve many types of problems. As they become successful at solving problems their confidence will grow and they will take those problem solving skills into their academic careers.
