My Students

My students are curious and motivated kids. School is important to them and their families. Their parents expect them to excel in their classes. Together as a community we are always striving to push the students to reach their highest potential.

Many of the students are internally motivated and encouraged by their parents to strive to reach their highest potential which their teachers also encourage by giving them challenging projects.

The students are challenged both in school and at home to improve their reading and critical thinking skills.

My Project

At my school, all seventh grade students participate in a historical fiction unit designed by the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Over 300 students will participate in this unit this year, which means we need many books available for them to engage with.

In this unit, students focus on a certain period of history and learn about it by reading fiction novels, picture books, graphic novels, nonfiction books and primary sources.

Students can choose to focus on time periods such as World War Two, the American Revolution, the Middle Ages and the Civil Rights Movement.

As the librarian, I supply all of the books for this project and need to have more books available for them to work with especially since they will be working in groups of four for their book clubs. This project helps students get a better understanding of the past by looking at it though the eyes of different authors.
