Help me give my students access to a wide variety of LEGO bricks and art resources so my students can build our community...all while incorporating mathematical, literacy and critical-thinking skills!
"Uggghh not another unit on our community. We learned about this last year and the year before that!" Help me change groans to grins by bringing Social Studies to life by adding a STEM and performance arts component.
Instead of just researching about how communities have changed over time, my students will research and design their own city using LEGO bricks and their own art designs.
Students will be able to use the LEGO bricks to engineer their ideal communities. Students will use stopmotion animation to bring their community to life. Literacy will be integrated throughout this unit because students will conduct research; maintain notes during their builds; and students will have to write a script for their stopmotion animation video (the performance art aspect). Math will be integrated because will have to use their knowledge of geometry (angles, area, perimeter, multiplication and more) to design their community. Students will work collaboratively with partners for this project-based learning activity.
My Project
Students will use the LEGO idea books to help them generate new ideas for their community. Students will use the LEGO bricks to design their own community. Students will have to be creative by using cardstock, markers, and glue to create any items they cannot build with the LEGO bricks to make their community more realistic. Students will use an iPad (already in the classroom) to take images and create video. Students will utilize the stopmotion animation app to bring their community to life.
I truly believe that integrating core subjects with art will enhance my students' unique gifts and talents as they think critically, problem-solve, and use their creativity while working collaboratively with others.
I want students to enhance their knowledge about the world by thinking critically as they wonder, create, and share with others.
