Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mis chicos absolutely love learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. I try to incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are fulfilled, meeting them where they are. I am very thankful to have a group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year. While the traditional World Languages curriculum mostly focuses on workbook and grammar activities, instead we play games and use different strategies to make sure the learning is comprehensible and meaningful. We use technology, read aloud, virtual reality, movie talks and comprehensible input in our lessons, but what we are really talking are selections that the students can connect/relate to. It is a true joy when the students leave the classroom asking to stay a bit more.
My Project
Learning a foreign can be stressful and intimidating but board games in the language classroom are an effective, low -anxiety, and fun way for students to learn and practice communication skills.
Board games are great to reinforce literacy and developing vocabulary.
Games like Scrabble, Pictionary, Taboo, Operation, and Scattegories encourage lots of communication and reinforcement of concepts taught in the classroom. Other games like Guess Who? or Clue are perfect to practice asking questions about physical features, items characteristics and moments and places.
Creating sculptures related to the vocabulary taught with Play-Doh and having them explain their creations in the target language.
In general, everyone will have the opportunity to learn to communicate across culture and language while having fun. All while they follow directions, play fair; and playing in another language will help them have fun while practicing the language!
