Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday is different. I have different students daily because of the low attendance. Since are students are low socio-economic they have a hard time getting to school. They come to class hungry and it is really hard for them to learn with all their struggles. I try to teach with interactive notebook
Some of my students attend school just to get the free meals, as they don't know what waits for them at home.
They hold many roles: students, cooks, babysitters for younger siblings, schedule keepers for the family, interpreters when their parents don't speak English, athletes, and role models. Many of my students are worried about where their next meal may come from, or where they may sleep that evening. I try to give them a positive place where they are respected by myself and peers, and can put away some of those extremely difficult jobs for a while and dive into science. . They can collaborate, experiment, and investigate a future in science that is rewarding and fulfilling. Even simple supplies are hard to come by for my students. Low income is the norm, and access to technology is sparse. To help them believe they can be a part of science, they must have the chance provided.
My Project
My students will be able to use the three requested iPad Minis daily. While teaching science, it is impossible for them to grasp the vastness of the scientific community without technology. Their textbooks have so many online features, including virtual labs. This is the major plan for the iPads. Working in groups, my students will be able to virtually dissect frogs, mix complex chemicals, build machines, and visit scientific labs all from a corner in my classroom. Many of my students are English language learners, and the online features of the textbook allow a Spanish version that will read aloud to them. Currently, these features not being utilized, as we do not have access to tablets. Imagine listening to someone reading from a textbook in a language you cannot understand. Very little learning can take place on these days for ESL students, but with the iPads, they will be able to follow along, comprehend, and ask the questions to further their understanding of the material without fear.
iPads are such incredible learning tools.
When students are unsure about a particular scientific idea, they can turn to the iPads for more information. Using the iPads, I can teach students to properly find answers to their scientific questions, allow them to experience the world in a way they may never be able to, and help them become lifelong learners. My Leadership students in particular will be able to work on yearbook ideas and help with the school moral. My science students will learn amazing things that they can share.
