My team of students are 80 of the hardest working, fun loving, and respectful children. This is their first year in middle school and they have had to learn how to navigate new friendships, personalities, and situations. It is a joy to watch them thrive and flourish as they mature into kind, responsible adolescents.
Students come to our school from across the world, with more than 50 different languages spoken in our hallways alone.
My students come from five different elementary schools from across our city in New Hampshire. The student body is the best mix of cultural diversity, where all students are able to learn about other cultures, traditions, and beliefs.
On the other hand, my school has a large percentage of students living in poverty. These students lack even the most basic of school supplies on a daily basis. It is a struggle to keep these students supplied with even the most basic of school essentials, never mind being able to afford them an amazing experiential experience.
My Project
Students come to my middle school from multiple feeder schools. Because of this fact, students also come into sixth grade with a varied language arts knowledge base. One of the most important things I do in my classroom is to get students from across multiple elementary schools all thinking on the same page. One way I do this is through using interactive notebooks in my classroom.
Bringing interactive notebooks into my classroom is one way to get my students fully engaged in the language arts curriculum.
By providing a hands-on way to learn language arts, students understand the topics on a deeper level. These interactive notebooks also are used as a great guidebook for my students throughout the year. The interactive nature of these notebooks allow students to fully enjoy my language arts class.
