Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is for the elementary portion of our school. There are approximately 250 K - 5 students who attend our PreK-8 public school. We are a true Title 1 school with 100% free breakfast and lunch services. Despite their struggles, our students are hungry to learn. We want to provide them with the headphones they need to access the computers when they are testing, learning and working on interventions/enrichment activities.
These students and community face many challenges which affect their ability to be successful academically and behaviorally including poverty, crime, language barriers, obesity, an unsafe learning environment, and lack of accessible neighborhood resources.
According to school and state assessments, the majority of the students are approximately 2 years below grade level.
The students have made progress in past years but need additional support to reinforce concepts. They are in need of additional practice opportunities to build/reinforce their learning and build new skills.
My Project
The students at this school struggle academically and we have programs available on our computers where they can help with remediation or provide enrichment opportunities. These programs focus on the core instruction of reading and mathematics, and include such programs as Success Maker, IXL, and Zearn Math. Students also use the computers to access all district and class assessments.
The wear and tear on the headphones we currently use have made them uncomfortable to use and at times unreliable.
Students use their hoodies to cushion their ears while trying to focus on the program they are using. Wires have frayed and the sound is not consistent. Having new headphones will allow us to continue to use the technology available to us as we strive to improve our learning.
