My students are hungry to use technology for self-expression! In our school, this year, we have 11 teachers who have taken an Adobe training and are ready to integrate the use of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and Flash into their curriculum. I'm one of these teachers!
If you walk through our halls, you will see my students smiling, carrying heavy backpacks, socializing with peers of all colors and backgrounds, and listening intently in class.
My students are passionate about learning--in fact they aren't shy about being nerdy! The Classics are so well-loved here that many of my students regularly participate in national (Jeopardy-style) Latin competitions and a few won first place!
I have a lot of pride in my school. I teach in a public 7-12 school that is selective, admitting only the top performing students in the city. My school is known to be nurturing, because we have dedicated teachers who go out of their way to help students pass difficult Advanced Placement classes. We are demographically a well-balanced school, with high performing students from various backgrounds and cultures. More than half of our students meet the federal poverty guidelines for free or reduced price lunch. We desperately lack funds for integrating technology.
My Project
I'm one of 11 teachers in various subjects like English and history who have been trained in integrating Adobe software so that our students can create media products that send a strong message. Our school offers a classical liberal arts education, but we need to integrate technology in our curriculum to prepare our students for college and the workplace. We received 250 licenses for the Adobe software, each worth over $400 (total $100,000) but we don't have enough computers to use this software in class. I teach a media class, where students learn how to create websites and use multimedia tools for expression. I want my students to use Adobe to create professional-quality posters, websites, and short animated clips. I am requesting 15 Macbooks for student use. The school has 16 others, and 31 will complete a mobile laptop lab for classroom use. When we complete the mobile laptop lab, I will be sharing it with the other 10 teachers who are also integrating Adobe into their classes.
My students have heard of the things they can do with Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, and other software tools.
These 15 Macbooks will allow us to build a complete mobile lab of 31 Macbooks. It will allow me to effectively use the Adobe software and my recent training and to integrate technology across many subjects areas.
