The students that stepped into my room in the August haven't stopped amazing me since I met them. One the first day of school, we started by talked about our big goal. We set 3 big goals for ourselves. We want to pass 3rd grade, grow 1.5 years in reading, and get 80% mastery on all 3rd grade standards. These are big goals, but my students have pushed themselves continuously to reach these. I've seen them push themselves in AND out of the classroom. Since the first week of school, my students have asked for extra homework, give up lunch and recess, and beg for tutoring all to reach their goals. They understand the importance of these goals, and how they will effect them not only next year, but also throughout the rest of their lives. These students have big dreams.
All of this to say, my students have earned and deserve resources to help them reach their goals.
They want more challenging and rigorous games/puzzles/books to use during small group, recess/lunch, and tutoring. These are some of the strongest students I've ever met. Their hard work has inspired me, and I hope it inspires you to invest in.
These games will allow me to differentiate for my students. I will be able to teach my students how to use these and how to be self-sufficient in playing them (which is an amazing skill for students to have). Then I will be able to help all my students work on exactly what they need to work on all at the exact same time. For example, one student can be working on sight words while one is working on time and measurement. This is helpful because topics are often covered quickly in class, and almost every student has some topic they need to review, but not all students need to review the same thing.
I believe this is exactly what my students need to start to fill some of the learning gaps we have in my classroom.
