This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students made the choice to come to an art and design school to get more exposure to different types of art. We're going into this year with a brand new curriculum focused on different types of media. For the first time, my students have the opportunity to take multiple levels of photography classes, and they're so excited about it!
My students are wonderful and sassy, completely in love with any type of artwork that expresses their own personal voice and experiences.
My Project
We're into the second semester in Photo, and my kids are taking to it in ways we never expected. Every time that I give them a project, they find ways to turn it into something completely their own. I want to keep pushing the boundaries of what they believe is possible and move them into being stronger photographers!
Although most wouldn't consider film to be a digital process, using film cameras, 35mm film, and film scanners give the control of digital processes with the fun and surprise of traditional ones.
My students have never used film photography before and I truly believe that it is a right of passage for student photographers. We were donated a classroom set of film cameras this year to give our students the chance to use their voice to tell their stories visually.
As we move into our documentary and fashion photography projects, I want my students to have the opportunity to combine both digital and traditional photography processes to create their portfolios.
