Help me give my students a variety of hand drums to discover the joy of rhythm through participation in a drum circle and how that rhythm can apply to other aspects of their lives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school where the majority of students have limited experiences outside the home. They have been taught rote education in earlier years, with a focus on language, reading and mathematics. Our district is designated Title 1, and nutritious eating is an emphasis on their well being.
Learning to solve problems, working well with others and communicating effectively are the focal points of learning for my students.
These students have great untapped potential, but finding the right way to release it is challenging. Often, they don't know how to express themselves appropriately and wind up with consequences they didn't want.
There are opportunities at our school for participation, but my target population rarely opts to join these lunch time events. Music is an element that all students have an experience with and it is something I would like to share with these students.
My Project
Finding rhythm is difficult for many people, but it's especially hard for middle school students who lack stability, financial and family support. Creating a drum circle at my school will enable students to find a safe haven where language is not a barrier and talking is not necessary. Common ground will be revealed through drumming - a personal attachment to something tangible and an intrinsic commitment to a group dynamic. Drum voices blend together to allow students to experience harmony and discover how rhythm is created and evolves. Providing choices in drums will allow students flexibility in finding what suits them best. Testing out options will eventually allow the students to demonstrate to peers techniques for which they have found success. It is hoped that over time, these students will find safety and support in not only their drum voices, but also in their internal voices pushing to be heard.
