WHS Computer Science students in grades 9-12 are using STEM education to solve problems in our community. We have an overabundance of mosquitos during the summer months which makes it difficult to be outside at times. In computer class, the students walk through projects using the arduino and/or rasberry pi's. Once they have mastered using the circuits with projects on a bread board, they continue to use them to program a rasberry pi with drones. The students love working with the drones and there are so many applications they can use them for.
My Project
A Samsung Solve for Tomorrow project in which the students built their own drone with four motors, a flight controller, receiver, lipo battery and much more. They added a raspberry pi to the drone so it's flight could be controlled by it as well as controlling a pump and sprayer they had added. The drone would be used to spray mosquitos and help reduce the amount of mosquitos and the safety in doing it. Drones can go in places that are more difficult to reach such as trees, bushes, rain gutters and etc. The students felt that this could first start out as a drone used for commercial application and eventually be built for a household product.
