Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a first grade class in a school in Washington Heights in New York City. I am the general education teacher in a co-teaching classroom with 28 students.
Ninety percent of my school receives free lunch, meaning they are living below the poverty line.
But despite this, they come ready to learn each and every day!
My students are always looking for new learning opportunities and jumping at the chance to grow as individuals. First grade is a huge growth year in academics, as well as in every aspect of life. This class is also starting to grow in independence, and we need tools to help us do so.
My Project
Our classroom uses iPads for different applications and websites for students to use in order to practice their literacy and math skills.
IPads are also a vital tool in preparing our students for the technological world around them.
Tablets are popular tools for getting information, learning new things, and entertaining oneself. It is important our students get the experience with them in an educational light, so they can see how they can be used to further their education and learning.
However, in our ever-expanding class size, we do not have a full working class set of iPads. So, if we want to research on our iPads for a project we cannot all do the research we want at the same time. Or if we are playing a review game on the tablet like Kahoot, not every student is able to play on their own. It would be helpful to have a additional iPads, so that when we are doing a class activity with them, each child is given the opportunity to independently experience and practice with the iPad.
