My Students

Update our short story inventory! Our most recent short story anthologies are from the 1950s. We sorely need to update our inventory. My students need a current anthology to inspire their own reading and writing.

I teach English at a fine arts high school in New York.

My students are incredibly creative; they have to audition in order to attend the school. However, they are not all strong readers and writers, and they need more current texts that entice them to read, and also promote creative writing.

My Project

THE BEST AMERICAN NON-REQUIRED READING, edited by Dave Eggers, is a collection of various short readings. From newspaper clippings to short stories that appeared in THE NEW YORKER, the writing in this text is extremely topical and current, so they engage the students' interest. I have already used excerpts from this text with great success with my students, but I would like to have a class set, so that I could include pieces on a more regular basis to inspire their reading and writing.

Please help my students to become more excited about reading and writing by supporting this project.

With this anthology, I will be able to add a much-needed 21st-century spark to my curriculum.
