Math isn't typically the most exciting subject in my students' day. Many of my students have struggled with math for years or have cognitive disabilities in reading and/or math. I really, really believe I can help these kids understand how math can be valuable to them beyond high school. Yes, even Algebra can apply to the real-world.
Math can be hard, so visually seeing a word problem come to life is exciting!
Students who can see, hear, feel, and express mathematics gain a deeper understanding of how math applies to real-world situations and their own lives. As much as possible, my classroom is about ""How can I use this when I leave this building?" Daily, we use technology, partner and small group discussions, and interactive notes to bring abstract concepts alive. These are skills and competencies they can take with them to the work force, the military, or college and vocational/trade programs.
My Project
These colorful erasable highlighters and markers will allow my students to do their math and not be afraid of making a messy mistake on their work and notes. My classroom is a place where mistakes are definitely okay, but standard #2 pencils can be uninteresting and just not stand out. With these supplies we can highlight and write in color. If we make a mistake, no worries, just erase it or white it out.
Scientific calculators will give these high school students a tool to quickly complete tedious long division and multiplication calculations with problems and move on to solving more interesting and complex problems.
Most adults use technology to do quick calculations. I want my students to have the same opportunity so they can spend their time working on actually talking about and coming up with different ways to solve the problem.
