Using Class Novels to Build a Love of Reading

My Students

My students are 5th graders that live in a small rural southern Utah community. They come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and some of the students have very limited access to the Internet and technology at home. Many have moved around a lot and have a wide variety of background experiences. They get excited to see how what they are learning connects to the world at large. They learn best when creating and building projects that connect with the real world. These types of projects are more meaningful to them than the traditional worksheet approach to learning.

My Project

I am trying to develop a classroom library of full class sets of novels. These novels will be used to build reading and comprehension skills and we model how to use basic and engaging reading strategies to develop discussion and meaning. Books that will inspire my student to immerse themselves in the world of literature. These materials will help me put the books in the hands of my students that will inspire them to open a book and see the series through to the end.

For some students, finding the right book can be a challenge, by using class novels to promote literacy we have found a wonderful way for students to develop a love reading, allowing them to focus on authors and genres that grab their attention and never let go.
