Chemistry, a course that I teach, is an amazing and interesting subject for most. Yet, with limited resources, it can be a hard subject to grasp or appreciate if not followed by hands-on and/or visual experiments. Lack of resources for meaningful and engaging projects limits what the school can offer, and in turn, reduces impact to what our students learn.
My Project
Vicky, age 17, wakes up feeling ill and ask her mother to give her Tylenol. Her mother digs in her purse for a pain reliever and hands it to the girl. Vicky takes it and goes to bed. Sometime later, mom goes to check on her but found her daughter unconscious on the floor. Paramedics arrive and take Vicky to the hospital. Later that date, she is pronounced dead at the hospital. Mom is devastated.
Vicky's case has been sent to the Medical Examiner's Office.
While waiting for Vicky's autopsy results, our chemist students decide to look closer at the medication that Vicky took before collapsing.
The requested material is some basic lab equipment that my students need to analyze the composition of the Tylenol. Mortar and pestle will be used to crush the pill, graduated cylinder to make solutions, filter and funnel to filter and collect the undissolved component in the pill, spatula to transfer the component, brushes to clean the glassware, and periodic table to be used as a reference.
