Help me give my students chemicals and demo sets so that they can have the full chemistry lab experience! These chemicals and demo sets will allow them to step into the roles of scientists and researchers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are future scientists! They commute from all over New York City to attend school in Harlem, however, the majority of students are from the Bronx, Brooklyn or the Harlem area itself. They are also of varying backgrounds, but the majority of students are African American/Black or Hispanic. Our school is big, it includes a middle school as well as a high school so we house over 1,000 students in the entire building.
My high school students are eager, ready to learn, and ready for new experiences in science.
Although some of them come in below reading and math level, they fight every day to do their best.
My Project
Learning scientific concepts and theories on paper can only take students so far. They need to be able to see the science-experience of chemistry firsthand in the lab! This type of hands-on, interactive, "in your face" learning is what will encourage future scientists and researchers. To hear the "pop" when hydrochloric acid and zinc combine is exciting! To see the foam produced when hydrogen peroxide, yeast and dish detergent are combined is thrilling!
To see a scientific concept come to life in their hands or right before their eyes is memorable and for some students, it could be life-changing !
There are so many chemistry experiments out there that will excite students about science.
