Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are amazing young people! They are curious and involved in their learning. Over 70% of our school is considered below the poverty level. We are working to engage our diverse population utilizing different learning strategies. Additionally, we are working with our students to develop self-regulation strategies and appropriate communication/problem-solving skills that they may not learn outside the school. These skills are transferring to middle school and our students are doing well compared to other middle school students.

My Project

We use the ZONEs of Regulation to teach students about self-control, but how do we get them to practice the skills in real-world situations? We use board games. It's a less stressful way to help children learn to cope with not always getting their way (maybe they don't get the color pawn they want or get to go first) and practicing negotiating with other students. The students problem-solve - who goes first, second, etc., and review the rules together. Students learn to cope with not winning and accepting that sometimes they lose and sometimes they win - and that it is okay.
