My students are primarily at-risk, low income, struggling readers. My school is a dropout prevention alternative school. Our students typically struggle with reading comprehension and motivation, so we work in small class settings to help give each student what they need.
My students come to our school because a traditional school hasn’t worked for them for one reason or another, and we have been working to implement a more student-centered, individualized learning experience for each student that enters our school.
My Project
Reading is all about confidence in my opinion. If you believe you aren't a good reader, then you are going to avoid reading at all costs. These are attitudes I see daily in my classroom. I want to foster a love of reading in my students, but in order to do that I have to show them how to actively read and build their reading confidence.
I am asking for several anthologies of high interest short stories geared toward teens.
I believe these anthologies will help build reading confidence using a shorter text. I am also asking for post-it notes and flair pens. These will be used to mark places of confusion, surprise, connections, etc. while reading and sketch, draw, write out their observations about their reading.
