Using an iPad as An Augmentative Communication Device

My students need an iPad to assist their communication since they have apraxia and are not being understood by their classroom teachers.

My Students

Some of my students are diagnosed with apraxia. This is a motor planning problem hampering their intelligibility. They have strong language skills but are not being understood by their peers, teachers or school staff.

My students are kindergarten and first graders who attend a public school.

Our elementary building is currently closed due to Super Storm Sandy. We will not be able to use that building for a long time. We are currently housed in a middle school building. Some of my students are displaced from their homes since those too were flooded and destroyed. Many of them lost all of their belongings.

My Project

Using an iPad as an augmentative communication device enables my students to express their knowledge without the interference of their articulation difficulties. Many times a teacher will call on one of these students to answer a question and "fake" understanding of what that child is saying. Using an iPad to help communicate while learning to articulate will alleviate the frustration on both the speaker and listener.

Please support this project as you would be helping my students by opening up a whole new world of communication to them.

My students have a lot to say but are so hampered by their difficulty forming the words.
