My students need individual copies of The Lemonade War in order to study marketing tips for making money, definitions of business terms, charts, diagrams, and math problems.
Our students come from a once thriving, coal-mining community that has been devastated by the loss of income and industry. With over 82% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, these children are in great need of a high-quality education. Education and shared resources will be their ticket out of poverty.
One of the best ways I can help with our poverty situation is to teach my students about the importance of knowing how to save money for a goal, set priorities for spending, learn about investments and most of all, the importance of forming relationships with people, especially public relations.
My Project
By reading The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies and doing a novel study of the book, my students will learn about financial literacy. In this story, one sibling-Evan Treski is people-smart. His younger sister, Jessie is math-smart, but not especially good with people. So when the siblings’ lemonade stand war begins, there’s no telling who will win. The siblings in this story learn some valuable life lessons in business.
My fourth and fifth grade students will learn marketing tips for making money, definitions of business terms, charts, diagrams, and math problems.
Most of all they will learn the importance of people skills and how to work together to achieve a goal.
