Help me give my students, the future ambassadors of our planet, the opportunity to grow plants, and ideas, that could end world hunger and reduce our carbon footprint.
We are a trauma-heavy, high-poverty, high-needs school district with a large population of homeless students and families.
Despite the challenges our students face, they are passionate about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—their thirst for knowledge is infectious and their curiosity is inspiring.
For this reason, our school has launched a K-4 technology and robotics program this year. Using a problem-solving based model, my students partake in various challenges, embark on numerous engineering projects, and are working to become adept at problem-solving and perseverance.
Of equal importance, they are learning to work as part of a team, to collaborate with one another, and to value each others cultural differences. These skills will be critical to their success both inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
My students are working to develop an idea that will improve the health of both people in our community and our environment.
My students believe that algae is the top secret, elusive ingredient in providing solutions to the grand global challenges of the 21st century.
Via their research, my students have discovered that this simple, abundant aquatic plant could possibly reduce our carbon footprint, end world hunger, be used as a bio-fuel, be burned to make energy, fertilize farms, and provide necessities for people world-wide such as warmth and light.
This project will provide additional tools that will allow students to use LEGO EV3 programming technology to run their own algae experiments, test, measure, and record the results, and reach out to community partners to share what they have discovered.
