Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My 3rd-5th grade students are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. All of my students are diverse learners with intellectual disabilities ; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but, as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically.
My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners.
Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel in school and in life.
My Project
The materials I have chosen will help my students with their fine motor skills. Because of their disabilities most of my students have poor fine motor skills. The Pre-Writing Magnetic Board and The Magnetic Color Maze will allow my students to explore the motions of writing and strengthen their fine motor skills. The materials will be used during center time to reinforce the pattern of writing by mastering the key letter formation. Furthermore the Magnetic Color Maze will not only help with their fine motor skills but will also help with their color recognition along the way! The Squish and Squeeze Sensory Beads will be used during the free choice time. These sensory beads are another avenue for our students to increase their fine motor skills.
