Use the Tools to Make the Final Cut: Designing Products
Help me give my students a variety of materials such as a trimmer, cardstock, glue sticks and vinyl so they can effectively design product prototypes with our new Cricut.
I teach a group of creative, thoughtful and eager to learn students! We are a school of choice that believes learning should be fun! Our school has a focus on arts integration and our students love hands-on activities and projects that are related to the “real world”. My group of students is very diverse. Students commute from different parts of the island, some spending over an hour every day to get to school. Yet, they enter the classroom ready to learn and tackle new learning opportunities!
My Project
Classroom money is used to set up businesses, while real US dollars are used to purchase students’ products. All profit is then donated to a charity that the class chooses!
Students need opportunities to explore the tools that are available as they imagine, create and innovate possible product ideas while learning about how a business is run.
This includes set-up and product creation, self-reflection of business practices, economic principles including opportunity cost, scarcity, cost-benefit analysis and supply and demand.
My students will use a variety of tools, including our recently funded Cricut machine to design prototypes, thus needing paper, glue and transfer paper to make their ideas come to life. The supplies in this project will allow my creative students to continue exploring the world of possibilities!
In our “mini-society”, students earn classroom money by showing up to class and completing their class job and earn bonuses. Students quickly learn money management, as they use their earnings to pay rent, pay to register their business and at times, pay fines ( not enough money for rent=late fee and possible interest). Incentives are available for purchase as well. Success is real! Hard work pays off as they prepare for Market Day!
Once students register the business, submit proposals and create a prototype, they will “pitch” their product(s) to a panel of “judges”, similar to Shark Tank.
All of this requires students to manage their money so they can pay for the business registration and to submit product proposals, while balancing their “wants” vs. “needs” in our mini-society.
