Every year I work with 20-30 wonderful first graders who come from low income households. What makes my students special? They are survivors and in spite of the difficult backgrounds they come from, they want to learn and succeed!
First graders are funny, loving, kind and creative - I love being a teacher!
I want to make sure that my students love school and want to be there by creating an environment that fosters creativity and learning.

My Project
Dry erase boards and clear reusable pockets are used in multiple ways in my classroom. I currently have them, but they are broken and worn out. Paper is expensive and we love our trees in Oregon!!
I use dry erase boards and clear reusable pockets to help students stay engaged as well as save money and natural resources.
We have a very strict copy budget in our school district, so I use dry erase boards and clear pockets daily. During math, students stay more engaged if they are "doing" math rather than just watching. They can all practice math at their seats at the same time instead of just watching one student at the board.
When we practice writing and spelling, students practice on their boards and use worksheets in clear pockets. This is a nice way for me to walk around and see who can do the task and who needs additional help. It is very quick feedback so I can target my instruction.
During reading, small group reading teachers and students use the boards to practice sounds and targeted reading words.
Dry erase boards and clear reusable pockets play a very important role in my students learning and they get used every day!
