Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you were a child, do you ever remember a teacher telling you that they couldn't give a math test, a homework assignment or a special project because there was no place to make copies? I don't. However, this is something my students deal with on a daily basis.
My co-teacher and I are fortunate to work with 18 fantastic fourth graders in a collaborative team teaching special education classroom.
Our students live in one of the poorest districts in our city and state, and their needs at home and in school are great. They are bright, enthusiastic and caring. Telling our students that they simply cannot print their latest writing piece on the computer because we (and the whole school) has no ink is heartbreaking.
My Project
In my five years as a teacher, copy machines have always been an issue. Because of this, I requested a small copy machine from Donors Choose last year. I was fortunate enough to receive it, and it has been a lifesaver! However, with no other working machines in our building, toner is going fast and at $50 a box, I am simply unable to keep up with our need. How will this directly affect the kids, you may ask? Well, without basic materials, teaching can be challenge. We are also able to create alternative exams, texts, and other resources for our students with special needs. Additionally, using the computers is a huge motivational tool for our students. I allow students to do research and complete writing assignments on our two classroom computers. Being able to create finished projects and print them serves as motivation for reluctant writers. In addition, printing out color copies of research articles helps motivate students to read and ask questions about interesting nonfiction texts
Your donation will help my co-teacher and I spend more of our preparation periods on actually preparing lessons and not stressing about copies.
It will ensure that our students are never missing out on lessons because of a lack of materials. Please help us! Our students are the best in the universe and they need your help!
