The county in which I teach is a diverse, multi-ethnic urban county and it is one of the fastest growing population metropolitan areas in the state. According to the 2010 Census redistricting data, the County has become a "minority-majority" county. What does this mean for me, as the teacher?
When teaching such a diverse group of students, I encounter problems such as language barriers, because for many of my students, English is not their first language.
Therefore, I must find creative means to be able to get the ideas across to them. My main weapon is Hands-On Applied Learning! Even if a student cannot understand the English Language, they are able to grasp a concept if they see it in action. However, hands on learning comes with a hefty price tag for the teacher. We have very little funding for projects/labs in Science, and therefore, I would appreciate any amount that donors could give in order to help my students succeed!
My Project
My students will use these materials to build a model of an animal or plant cell. The different types of candy will be used to represent cell organelles such as the cell membrane, the cell wall, the nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, vacuoles, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, the golgi complex, and lysosomes.
When we want to pass on information and skills to someone else, it is essential to recognize how important sharing various kinds of models is.
Models are representative of the skill or content students are expected to perform themselves. It’s more than just giving a visual representation of content; rather, a model is a product or process students can imitate to develop their own skills and understanding.
When we combine the general explanation of a task with a concrete model of what their process or product should look like, we give students a direct image of their targeted outcome. It makes for easy guidance and comparison, as students can orchestrate their work to emulate the model to learn the content.
