This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an at-risk school where the community and parental involvement is low. The population is 99% African American and extremely transient. The students are inquisitive and enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.
My students are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have such wonderful kids who want to learn.
The students are fearless when it comes to technology and as children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage their world.
My Project
My students live in an urban area without many options to obtain organically grown vegetables. Nor are these students exposed to learn how to often grow these vegetables themselves. As a result, my students will learn the science behind growing plants, academic writing to inform others of how to complete the process, and learn to identify herbs, spices, and vegetables that are commonly used within their dishes. Also, the students will learn about health and nutrition throughout this process.
Health and nutrition is important because many of this demographic otherwise would not learn about health choices and nutrition until facing a health crisis of their own or of a family member.
