My Students
I am a Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten teacher at a school which is one of the first public schools in the nation to offer free Montessori education in an underserved, high needs community.
As a public Montessori school, we strive to create a community where social/emotional health, knowledge, and peace are a priority.
My students are thoughtful, creative, and curious children who need love, a healthy community, and proper learning resources to realize their full potential.

My Project
These materials will help to build my students' literacy and visual discrimination skills. In my Montessori classroom, the children use trays to carry metal insets (each one is a different shape), colored pencils and paper to their work area. It is important to take care of the materials. As the child traces the metal inset and colors it in beautifully, it indirectly prepares her for reading and writing. She holds the knob on the metal inset with a three-point finger grasp of her dominant hand.
The knobless cylinders enhance children's visual discrimination.
This work correlates with the cylinder blocks that I currently have on the shelf in the classroom. Children are able to build math skills by learning about dimension, comparison and grading. They are also be able to explore with the material.
