Saving the planet, one laptop at a time! Why is environmental science and conservation important to teach elementary students? Well, mainly because kids need to know how to protect and preserve our environment and natural resources, so they will be here for generations to come!
I teach 40 bright and talented students from Arkansas.
For some students, school is the only place where they have the opportunity to use technology, especially laptops. Students need to be exposed to this technology in today's society.
My students need an iPad and Apple watch to study, identify, research, and photograph local plant adaptations and then use this information to create their own Unique Plant System. As part of a study on biodiversity UPS, Unique Plant Systems, will be created by our students. In collaboration with classroom teachers, students will study the local environment, learn firsthand how plants adapt to the environment and use the iPad and Apple watch to record their findings and take pictures of local plants. They will use an iPad and Apple Watch app such as Leafsnap to locate and identify the likely species name and obtain more information about the plant.
Students will return to the classroom to collaborate on a MindMap created on the iPad to discuss the plants that were found and why they were suited for the local environment.
Next, they will use the app "Explain Everything" on the Apple Watch and iPad to create a Unique Plant System that is suited to this environment and then to present their information to the class.
This project will help students understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment, builds knowledge and skills necessary to address complex environmental issues, as well as ways they can take action to keep our environment healthy and sustainable for the future.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss, The Lorax Without direct experience with the environment how can we expect students to understand the interrelationship between species, the need for wise land use and the importance of making good decisions about its future? Our students are the stewards of the land. This project helps prepare them to make wise choices.
