Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Over half of the students in Edison McNair are English language learners and for the past two years I have tried to build ways to improve on the students literacy skills. Just as primary students can follow a story in a book when at a listening center, the same methodology also works for intermediate students. I have attempted to have listening centers in the classroom before but the noise level of the tape player or CD was either too noisy for the rest of the class or too low for the students trying to follow along! Since that little fiasco, I have found out that a non-powered listening center would be very useful. With these, the students can plug in multiple headphones into a jack-box which will allow them to listen to books on tape or CD without disturbing the entire class and vice versa. The students have told me in the past that listening to a book on tape/CD has helped them understand the book better and enjoy the books more. By having a non-powered listening center, I want to continue to give students the option to listen to the books that they are reading.
