My Students

Hello, I am the librarian at a middle school in California. This year we are in the process of rebuilding our book selection in the library. I have learned over my 3 years as librarian at our school that my students are fascinated with reading and excited by the opportunity to check out new books they have not previously had the opportunity to read.

We are a small middle school with 300 wonderful and amazing students.

74% of my students come from lower-income families and qualify for free or reduced lunches. My library has no budget for new materials. The only funds I can use to buy books for my students come from fundraising. My students deserve every opportunity to learn everything they need to succeed regardless of their socioeconomic status in our world. I want them to read books that open their minds, broaden their perspectives and educate them about the bright opportunities that are available to them for their futures.

My Project

The more familiar I become with our collection, the more I realize we are missing lots of key subjects and modern ideas. This list of books will be a wonderful addition to our Library and inspire my students to become life-long readers.

Many of the books listed in my project are books specifically requested by my students.

The books by Brandon Mull, are a much-awaited conclusion to the series. The Fairy Tales books are for my Graphic Novel readers. Our collection is lacking in sewing, photography, sports icons from this century and so much more. The non-fiction titles in the list have been requested by many different students.

Many of my students have limited access to books at home. My Library is sometimes the only link my students have to read and learn about subjects in which they are interested. Through your assistance, we can ensure that their school is a safe and nurturing place where access to reading will motivate them to learn, think big and pursue their dreams.
