Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a very diverse Title I school, in the inner city, which serves students in grades PreK-5 and provides rigorous academics and a safe learning environment. All children receive free breakfast and lunch due to this neighborhood's socioeconomic status. They come from a wonderful mix of ethnic and economic backgrounds, and despite any challenges that my students may face, they come to school daily, prepared to do their best.
Each morning, my students actively come into our classroom eager and excited to start a new day of learning.
They walk into the classroom bursting with energy, creativity and full of life. My students truly inspire me with their passion and an insatiable love for learning.
My Project
Every morning we begin our day with the "Good Morning" songs so that we are ready to learn. We use music throughout the day to give our brains a break, to learn our math facts with catchy songs, and to learn the alphabet and sight words. Our current stereo system is a salvaged radio with one speaker and no functioning CD player. I can not play the doubles math facts or any sight word songs that help my students recall facts with music. I am also requesting speakers to be used with our classroom laptop and elmo projector system because the speakers we currently have are old, with only one side that works. It goes in and out when turned on and it is so difficult for my students to listen to videos during our Mystery Science lessons. The MP3 player will be used for our listening center. We currently have 5 ipod shuffles, that are used by a small group of students during literacy center time. After several years of use, one no longer works. I am looking for a cheaper version so that my students may continue to listen to stories and support their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
A new classroom stereo, an MP3 player, and a pair of speakers will allow my students to move to the music, engage with a story, and listen to our weekly science videos.
Technology is an integral part of learning in today's classrooms. Please help to bring technology up to date in our first grade classroom.
