Being a kid can be hard, but when you do not have the emotional understanding to express your feelings, it can cause behavioral problems. My classroom is a safe space for students to learn how to deal with their emotions, trauma and social skills.
My class is made up of students from various grade levels and ability levels.
We work hard to fill in learning gaps and have students reach grade level. My students are dealing with emotional issues that make it hard for them to handle frustration with tasks and need a lot of individual attention.
By learning to work independently and with purpose, my students will have the chance to mainstream into other classrooms with their peer groups. Our biggest goal with my students is for them to learn not only to control their emotions but to learn how to be students. Modeling good classroom routines and tasks is important for them to master and move back into general education classrooms.
My Project
My class LEGO brick center is over 6 years old and we need to update and replace lost or just missing pieces. LEGO plates have been loved to a breaking point when learning fractions and arrays in math, as well as making different patterns and while using our imagination to get inspired to write. We have even used LEGOs to retell stories and make movies about our writing. LEGO bricks have made it home or just disappeared from our cases. The simple machine sets would add to our STEM bin activities. Also, we just enjoy LEGO time to work on our modeling our social skill of being a good friend by sharing, conversations about building and just being with each other while playing and not being unkind. Students also benefit from earning time with LEGOs and Mrs. Bennett while building and talking.
