My students don't often have access to text in their homes. We send books home each night for them to read with their families and practice their skills. Books get lost and destroyed so that the library slowly dwindles. Our class would love some new sets of books to explore new topics.
My students come from many diverse backgrounds.
They speak many languages and are learning Spanish and english in class. Our school is very urban, in the center of our city, and many students come from households without a lot of money. The majority of the students are english language learners and receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Each day in first grade every student receives a book on their reading level to take home and practice. It is important that these texts are interesting and engaging to the students as well as help them to practice reading skills. I want all students to value and enjoy reading and learn about new things.
We no longer have money in the budget to buy new sets of books for the reading library.
It has been many years since it was updated and we try to maintain it as best as we can at teacher expense. These books would be an important addition to our library and offer more choices to the students.
