As our school motto says, "we are a small school making a big difference." My 8th graders are well-rounded and adventurous when it comes to their education. I have students who are especially artistic, some who are exceptionally skilled in engineering and construction, and some who lead the way with their inquisitive approach to everything. The 7th graders are much the same and have already demonstrated an eagerness to apply their learning to the real world.
From building model bridges to building ramps for a gravitational raceway, from following mock investments in real time on the Dow Jones to exploring their way through math around the room, these students learn best when they are creating and applying their learning in a hands-on manner.
These 7th and 8th grade students will further their learning as they develop into student leaders. The eventual creation of an after school STEAM Club will allow them to take their classroom learning to the next level.
My Project
My students love and appreciate hands-on learning. They are ready to take it to the next level, literally. Eighth grade students will build obstacle courses and conduct drone races while seventh grade students will launch model rockets in math, prior to constructing and launching their own rockets. Both lessons will include the collection and analysis of data. The tablets and Spheros will be used to further develop coding skills and will pave the way for additional coding and robotics uses in science and math as we prepare for even more STEAM activities in the classroom and after school. Students will also use the tablets in conjunction with the drones and AR/VR development. They have already started to explore AR/VR activities using Merge Cubes and Google Cardboard. These new tools will help facilitate the transition from consumer to creator.
This project begins targeting 28 students, but over time will reach even more, especially as those 28 become student leaders within our future STEAM endeavors.
This is more than a project, it is the rocket engine that will propel us Up, Up, Up, and Away!
