Working as a school-based physical therapist in the Worcester Public School System, I am privileged to have the opportunity to provide support services in a variety of classroom settings. I currently provide services to students ranging from 3 years of age through 22 years. These students present with a vast range of challenges varying from mild/moderate physical challenges to severe physical and sensory concerns. My sights for this project are set on elementary-aged special needs students presenting with a variety of issues, some of which include sensory, balance, vestibular dysfunction, and diminished core strength.
The benefits of sensory swings are endless (as well as fun)!
Several of these benefits include increasing attention span, improving coordination and soothing overly stimulated senses. In recent years sensory swings have become a staple sensory integration tool for children with special needs!
My Project
Currently, I am working with a team of teachers and therapists in our school with the focus of establishing a Sensory Room. The intent of this room is to provide our special needs students a safe opportunity to explore and meet the needs of their ever-changing sensory diet.
Sensory swings are a great addition to a sensory room or a sensory diet!
Swinging, jumping, spinning, and rocking are important to children not only for fun and exercise but also to help their bodies organize and to regulate their sensory systems. Our bodies’ vestibular system is the sensory system that provides the primary input about movement, balance, spatial awareness and positioning. It helps us prepare our posture, maintain our balance, properly use our vision, calm ourselves and regulate our behavior. These are essential components to achieve academic success.
